Feast Friday

Mert's Heart and Soul Resturant in Uptown Charlotte is well known for their southern soul food, low country, and gullah menu. You feel at home when you walk into the delightfully mis-matched resturant to the sound of Ella Fitzgerald or Nat King Coal over the speakers and portraits of Bessie Smith, James Brown, and other soul icons, as well as photos of everyday folks from the '50s and '60s hanging all over. Start with the cornbread and homemade honey butter and you won't be disappointed! The sweet cornbread is baked individually in small loaf pans for each table.
My favorite dish is the Red Beans and Smoked Turkey Sausage, because flavors of the beans and sausage mix perfectly with the rice, and the fresh field onions and spices on top just add to the delicious flavor. Another favorite is the Shrimp and Grits. In addition to the low country choices, you can also find southern staples like Southern Fried Chicken, BBQ Pork, Fried Catfish, and they always have more vegetable choices than you can imagine.

Stop in, or order online! They will surely take care of you.

Owners James and ReneƩ Bazzelle previously owned a catering company in Georgia, and James was the executive chef at Charlotte's Holiday Inn. They opened Mert's in 1998.
