Ybor City was founded as an independent town in 1885 by a group of cigar manufacturers led by Vicente Martinez-Ybor. The original population was mostly composed of Cuban and Spanish immigrants who worked in the cigar factories. Italian and Eastern-European Jewish immigrants following shortly thereafter, predominantly founding retail shops, farms and grocery stores, and other businesses which catered to the cigar industry. The city was annexed by, and became part of, Tampa in 1887.

Customer Style Profile> SirRezzyRez
Wearing his Vintage Flintlock Pistol Tie Clip from Stitch Machine.
Take a gander at the dapper styles of one of my newest customers, Rez. I love how he mixes rich textures like leather, wool, knits, cotton, tweed (etc.) and unexpected patterns like plaids, stripes, checks and dots for a relaxed, dressed up, masculine look. Oh yeah, and the tie clips are out of control too! Keep up with his daily styles & observations on Twitter at @SirRezzyRez and his professional work at goniur.com. Rez's latest project, Stitches of Style, which will be devoted to the art and history of fashion.

Fundraiser for Cancer Treatment & Survivorship
Stitch Machine & Team Plus One

I've partnered up with Team Plus One to design these sharp athletic accessories based on their logo and message. I've been working on the designs for these products for quite awhile, and I'm so glad to finally share them in my shop. 50% of the proceeds go directly to cancer research and survivorship via Team Plus One's campaign for 24 Hours of Booty.

THE STORY
Team Plus One is a bike team in Charlotte, NC working to build a supportive community around all those affected by cancer. Besides biking together, the team's primary goal is raising money to donate directly to 24 Hours of Booty, a fundraising event and nonprofit in Charlotte, North Carolina for national and local cancer initiatives.
Plus One was born out of a conversation between Bryan Sheilds, a two time cancer survivor, and his wife Jen while they were biking in their first 24 Hours of Booty event as Bryan began the healing process. Recognizing that the physical toll cancer takes on the body is only part of the struggle, they started Plus One to focus on emotional healing.
Bryan reached out to me a few months ago to design some merchandise for Plus One to help with fundraising efforts for their team goal of donating $20,000 towards research.

We've put in a lot of work on this project, and in the process Bryan's story and his family's positive, proactive work for greater good have become very near and dear to my heart. (I met Bryan when he ordered several gifts online for the women in his family, and I only began to learn about his story and his fundraising efforts after getting to know him more through social media and then in person at an art event in Charlotte.) I'd really love for my customers to help out with this special cause if at all possible.

Know someone who needs a little extra encouragement? Or maybe someone who is working to overcome a tough goal? Or Both? Gift them a Plus One pin or hair accessory to keep the positive thoughts flowing, and 50% of your gift goes directly to benefit cancer initiatives. It's a win/win! Purchase within the next two weeks to benefit the 2010/2011 Campaign. Thank you so much!

Wedding Plans: A Tour of the Vineyard
Dan and my mom wander through the vines.
We recently visited Graham/Saxapahaw North Carolina to iron out some wedding details. It was a productive trip- We found the hotel we'll recommend to our guests and also our rehearsal dinner spot: The Eddy. It's an upscale pub on the Haw River with a cellar/vintage feel that serves food from local farms. Plus it's less than a mile from Benjamin Vineyards & Winery, where we'll get married. We stopped by the winery to decide which of their wines we'll have at the wedding (they make all of their wine on-site), and we also got an impromptu tour. So beautiful this time of year!

Inkable Images
We had a great turnout for the most recent CTHm Make-Out Craft Session, and everyone did great work! I taught "Carve a Stamp, Print a Postcard". My creative participants came up with all kinds of inkable images, including: stamped labels for canned jellies, business logos, self portraits and animal shaped stamps. Here's what the workshop was all about. I snapped these photos between instructions.

Question of the Week
Do you have a good, clean "grandpa" joke?
It needn't be about a grandpa, just a joke a grandpa might tell. Everyone's got at least one. Here's an example to get things started. One of my customers at work told me this joke yesterday. He sorta hunched over, huddled close and spoke really quietly, like it was a secret he was sharing with me. hee hee :)
Question: How do you fix a broken tomato?
Answer: Tomato Paste
Now share yours below!

Gimmeakiss
Dan (my fiancé) won tickets to the Avett Brothers show in Charlotte this past weekend!
How?
Laurel Market, a place we frequent for delicious, fresh sandwiches, worked with cello player Joe Kwon to design the sandwiches below. Each time you bought one this month, you were entered into the drawing. Dan also won a free 6 pack of beer from the market and a limited edition live Emotionalism CD.
The show was so much fun. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals wailed out soulful sounds, and the Avett Brothers tore it up! Here's the last song of their set. I wish I'd gotten one of the high energy songs on video, but we were too busy dancing and singing!
We were both supposed to work that night, so with one day's notice we had to scramble to get people to cover our shifts. Thanks to our great co-workers, it all worked out eventually.
The Bojangles Arena was sold out. Just look at the people!
***Disclosure: We have no personal connections with Laurel Market or The Avett Brothers, except just being fans of both! It was just Dan's lucky day!***

Well, I have a confession, Megan. I had Dan pose in a handmade crocheted beanie when I first started this blog. Want proof?

You may have seen these websites before, but I couldn't resist sharing them. I don't agree with everything (or maybe even anything) in the links below, but they are worth a laugh!

Personally, I think people should wear whatever hairstyle they want. But this blog author doesn't agree.

This website pokes fun at products on the Etsy website. I have a friend who had an item featured on Regretsy and it did wonders for her sales! Who knew?

Project: Plastic Bag Stash Buster
The number of plastic bags we have is getting out of control. Every time we make a trip to the grocery store, we stuff 8 more plastic bags into this drawer in our kitchen, and we can't even close it anymore. We don't have a dog so we never reuse them for anything. We have cloth bags but we never remember to bring them. So I'm learning how to fuse our existing plastic bags and make reusable fold-away shopping bags that I can keep in my purse so that we can be more efficient in the future.
(When I say "efficient" I mean saving energy over time. When more shoppers bring reusable bags, the stores don't order as many paper or plastic bags each week becasue the stores want to save money. That reduces fuel to ship boxes of bags to stores, reduces never ending trash and bag recycling operations, reduces petroleum used to make new plastic bags and trees cut for new paper bags, etc. etc. etc. blah blah blah. But, I digress.)
I found out about fusing plastic from a crafty girl I met in Atlanta, So She Sews, who makes the coolest coffee cozies, hair accessories, and pouches from fused plastic bags. I found this great video from Make Magazine and Etsy that shows how to do it:
After bagging groceries for 1 year and 9 months, I have to say that the "chico" style bags are my favorite because they fold into a small pouch but are big when they're unfolded. They are very strong and fit comfortably on your shoulder when filled with food. I looked around for a sewing pattern similar in style, so that I could make myself a copy-cat version out of fused plastic grocery bags and found this great tutorial from Crafty Ady, a working mom in the UK who sews:
The Fold-Away Shopping Bag Tutorial
I'll just have to sew my smaller fused plastic pieces together to make "cloth" and then I'll start cutting out the pattern. I'll update you later on how it is going. Wish me luck!

Presidents' Day Hairstyles
Let's take a look back at wacky hairstyles some of the United States Presidents have sported over the first century and a half of our democracy. (I stopped around year 1920 because the presidents' styles start getting less free-spirited and more controlled after that. I'll save those for another post.)
